Exploring the World of Coffee with Expat. Roasters
Bali, renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich culture, offers much more than just scenic beauty. Known as the Island of the Gods, Bali has become a vibrant hub for coffee enthusiasts, thanks to its booming coffee culture and thriving tourism industry. At the heart of this coffee revolution is Expat. Roasters, a specialty coffee roastery and café chain that has been transforming Bali’s coffee scene since its inception in 2016.
Indonesia, the world's third-largest coffee producer, is home to a burgeoning coffee industry. Expat. Roasters, founded by award-winning barista Shae Macnamara, is a key player in this movement. The company is dedicated to sourcing and roasting the finest coffee beans, and has established itself as a cornerstone of Bali's dynamic coffee culture.
Commitment to Indonesian Coffee and Local Farmers
Expat. Roasters distinguishes itself by using 90% Indonesian coffee beans. From the slopes of Mount Batur in Kintamani, Bali, to the highlands of West Java and Aceh, the company collaborates closely with local farmers to source the highest quality beans. Expat. Roasters supports these farmers not only by purchasing their coffee but also by visiting them regularly to observe and assist in their coffee processing methods directly. This hands-on approach includes engaging with farmers to understand their challenges and working together to implement the best practices for coffee cultivation and processing.
During visits to farms in Kintamani, Bali, Expat. Roasters' team closely monitors the coffee plants' growth and the various processing methods used, such as natural, honey, full washed, and wet hulled. This direct involvement ensures that the beans produced meet the highest standards of quality. This close relationship allows for experimentation with processing methods and farming techniques, ensuring the best possible coffee is produced. While the majority of their beans are sourced within Indonesia, a small selection of specialty coffee is handpicked from global brokers.
"Our visits to Kintamani are more than just trips, they are integral to our commitment to supporting local farmers and ensuring the highest quality of coffee," says Shae Macnamara, Founder and CEO of Expat. Roasters. "We are deeply invested in the local community and work hard to ensure our coffee not only tastes great but also supports the livelihoods of the farmers we work with."
Talented Baristas and Exceptional Coffee Experiences
Expat. Roasters' talented baristas play a crucial role in delivering exceptional coffee experiences. Each cup is crafted with precision and passion, reflecting the brand's commitment to excellence. Yande Wirawan, Brand Ambassador and Head of Training, emphasizes the importance of skilled baristas in delivering the perfect coffee experience: "Our baristas are the heart of Expat. Roasters. Their expertise and dedication ensure that every cup of coffee is a true reflection of our brand's values."
A Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is a core principle for Expat. Roasters. The company uses coffee grounds as fertilizer for gardens and farms in Bali, recycles coffee waste into products such as sunglasses, and encourages customers to reuse coffee tins through their Good Coffee All Around program. Additionally, they have eliminated plastic from their packaging, further underscoring their commitment to environmental responsibility.
Expat. Roasters continues to lead the way in Indonesia's coffee scene, driven by a passion for quality, community, and sustainability. Their dedication to sourcing the finest beans, nurturing local talent, and protecting the environment makes them a standout brand in the world of coffee.
